Auto maintenance and repair specialist The Humble Mechanic shows you how some simple, regular maintenance can help ensure your wiper blades are in good shape.

When it rains in Chula Vista, always having clear vision, is an important safety feature for all vehicles, and your car's windshield wipers are designed to maximize a driver's vision by wiping away grime and precipitation.

Windshield wipers seem like a minor, almost, never used in Chula Vista, part of every car. However minor and infrequently used, windshield wipers can be an overlooked part of your car’s safety system. If your wipers are not working properly, it may be difficult to see the road or other hazards when it rains or snows. Faulty wiper blades can be ineffective and even smear your windshield, potentially creating visibility issues. Some simple, regular maintenance can help ensure your wiper blades are in good shape. Outside of the basic preventing of accidents, having the ability to see will certainly improve your driving safety which will have an immediate impact on your Allstate car insurance premiums because you will not be making Allstate car insurance claims for car insurance coverage to pay for damages and repairs.

Regular Wiper Inspections

Here in Chula Vista, the coastal climate's of South Bay San Diego Region can have a constant environment of warm arid air with sea salt condensation, a mix of environmental factors that can accelerate wipers drying out.  Wiper blades are made out of rubber and can wear even with limited use. Allstate car insurance agents have been trained to advise their Allstate car insurance customers that windshield wiper blades should be inspected regularly and replaced, if needed, every six to 12 months, according to Firestone Complete Auto Care. Jason Raya, owner of Allstate Insurance Agent's Raya Onsurance Agency stated, "If your blades are dried out and cracked, become ripped, torn or heavily worn, they might will probably not nave a clean edge and won't grip the windshield properly which will struggle to remove mud, rain, and sand".

Replace Your Wipers

Chula Vista Allstate Agency advises on hanging your wiper blades is typically a simple task. If you’re not confident about your skills, it may be a good idea to leave it to the professionals — it’s often done when you take your car to a quick lube shop. But, if you want to do it yourself, Cars.com provides these steps:
  1. Measure to ensure that you get the proper replacement wiper. So, measure the wiper blade length prior to heading to get the replacement wiper. Always checking for the correct blade size in your car’s owner’s manual will give you the exact parts specifications.
  2. Removing the old worn out wiper. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield and depress the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the wiper arm. When the tab is depressed, slide the wiper blade off the arm by pulling downward.
  3. Properly attach the new wiper blade. Pull the wiper blade tight onto the arm. You will hear a clicking sound when it locks into place. Now, simply lower the arm slowly back onto the windshield and repeat this process on the other wiper arm.
  4. Test the wiper before you drive. Finally, test the wipers after installation. It’s better to do it now, when it’s convenient, as opposed to during the middle of a downpour.
Taking these simple steps can help make sure your wipers are working efficiently and maximize your visibility for safer driving.
